“How can it be so close?” Incomprehensible, when one considers that one of the candidates has a huge collection of what used to be considered “automatic disqualifiers” that somehow fail to drive away nearly half of the citizens of the United States.
So we observe amazing things happening: a candidate called a fascist by three top generals who worked with that candidate when he was President before; a candidate who shows clear signs of cognitive deterioration; a candidate whose crimes have been clearly laid out in recently-released court filings; a candidate whose praise of Hitler and his generals has become the stuff of a brilliantly-made campaign ad; a candidate who won’t take questions at a “townhall” session, but instead plays music and sways to it for more than half an hour, while the Republican governor of South Dakota looks on like she’s in a “hostage video”; a candidate who tells the nation of his intention to use the U.S. military to go after those Americans who oppose him; etc.
But, because we do not understand some of the fundamental forces at work in the hearts and minds of those Americans who will or might vote for him, we cannot predict how any of this will play out.
And with this election being essentially a moment where the American people will be choosing between continuing American Democracy, or devolving into an American Fascism, the uncertainty resulting from the operation of strange forces makes this election unusually unpredictable. And makes this moment one of unusual tension and anxiety.
All this is discussed in this 17-minute video:
