I’ll start with:
Humanism and empathy may be possible on a small interpersonal level, indeed sometimes we punish the lack thereof with our laws. The less personal it becomes the more they fade away.
Dehumanization is the denial of full humanity in others along with the cruelty and suffering that accompany it.[1][2][3] A practical definition refers to it as the viewing and the treatment of other people as though they lack the mental capacities that are commonly attributed to human beings.[4] In this definition, every act or thought that regards a person as "less than" human is dehumanization.[5]
Dehumanization is one form of incitement to genocide.[6] It has also been used to justify war, judicial and extrajudicial killing, slavery, the confiscation of property, denial of suffrage and other rights, and to attack enemies or political opponents.
All Suffering is Caused by Ignorance. People Inflict Pain On Others in the Selfish Pursuit of Own Happiness Or Satisfaction.
Buddha
This may be a controversial statement;
I do not believe that humanism and empathy are naturally part of our makeup, they have to be taught and learnt. Competition is our natural baseline and it needs tempering.
Many philosophers and prophets have tried to show us the way, only for their words to be distorted to justify our actions.
I turned to Buddhism, not because it was better than any other philosophy, its methodology suited my internal logic and calmed my severe social anxiety. Karma to me is that little voice that whispers to you, watch it, you are harming others, therefore yourself, call it your conscience if you will.
Dehumanization starts with the principle that one group of people is better than another and this then becomes an ingrained justification for any horror. Be aware some individuals will prey on this internal prejudice even if you are unaware of it.
I try, with mediocre success, to treat people for who they are rather than who I think they should be.
Aspirational rather than affirmation.
Acceptation/understanding rather than rejection.
